Does The Thélema Abbey Still Hold Aleister Crowley's Haunted Dark Power And Real Demonic Secrets?
Aleister Crowley's Thelema Abbey, Corfù, Sicily
by Jonah Scorino
The well known haunted lost villa known to many as the Abbey of Thelema was once the notorious home of" Aliester Crowley", And yes, it still stands today. It's once solid structure now crumbles and falls into a condition of disrepair, and many still believe it is the most wretched of haunted places where real demons and ghost still haunt. I traveled there in the summer of 2010 and was more then overwhelemed at what I found. From crowleys original images to recent perverse paranormal grafitti.
Many locals will tell you to stay clear that real gate to hell. More so they state the place is haunted by ghosts, devil's and demons. And one should avoid speaking of the hidden villa or dare to venture near it in fear of the evil curse that will befall you. Tales of tourist going there and not returning the same or often sited. Stories of midnight orgy's and todays real devil worshipers holding abominal dark sabbath rituals there or often spoken of in hushed tones.
To this date no one has at thi spoint come forward with information on an actual paranormal investigation where a team has gone in or investigated the location properly.
The Abbey of Thelema refers to a small house which was used as a temple and spiritual centre founded by Aleister Crowley and Leah Hirsig in Cefalù, Sicily in 1920.
In the year 1955, Kenneth Anger and his friend Alfred Kinsey (American biologist and professor of entomology and zoology, who in 1947 founded the Institute for Sex Research at Indiana University, now known as the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, as well as producing the Kinsey Reports and the Kinsey scale.) traveled to the derelict Abbey of Thelema in Cefalù, Sicily in order to film a short documentary entitled Thelema Abbey. The abbey itself had been used by Aleister Crowley for his commune during the 1920s, and Anger restored many of the erotic wall paintings that were found there as well as performing certain Crowley rituals at the site. The documentary was made for the British television series Omnibus, who later for some strange unexplained reason just simply lost it.

The magical strange alure of Crowley's deeds still calls to many today in the 21st century, and many find an attraction that conusmes them to all that he touched. The attraction to homes onced owned or lived in by the great beast such as The Abbey is currently for sale.
Kenneth Anger (born Kenneth Wilbur Anglemeyer; February 3, 1927) is an American underground experimental filmmaker, actor and author. Working exclusively in short films, he has produced almost forty works since 1937, nine of which in particular have been grouped together as the "Magick Lantern Cycle", and form the basis of Anger's reputation as one of the most influential independent filmmakers in cinema history. Kenneth Anger revisited the Abbey in 2007, 52 years after his 1955 visit, and made a short video which can be found as an "extra" on the "Anger Me" DVD.
Alfred Charles Kinsey (June 23, 1894 – August 25, 1956) was an American biologist and professor of entomology and zoology, who in 1947 founded the Institute for Sex Research at Indiana University, now known as the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, as well as producing the Kinsey Reports and the Kinsey scale. Kinsey's research on human sexuality, foundational to the modern field of sexology, provoked controversy in the 1940s and 1950s. His work has profoundly influenced social and cultural values in the United States and many other countries.
Aleister Crowley (12 October 1875 – 1 December 1947), born Edward Alexander Crowley, and also known as both Frater Perdurabo and The Great Beast, was an influential English occultist, mystic and ceremonial magician, responsible for founding the religious philosophy of Thelema. He was also successful in various other fields, including mountaineering, chess and poetry, and it has also been alleged that he was a spy for the British government. In his role as the founder of the Thelemite faith, he came to see himself as the prophet who was entrusted with informing humanity that it was entering the new Aeon of Horus in the early twentieth century.
Born into a wealthy upper class family, as a young man he became an influential member of the esoteric Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn after befriending the order's leader, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers. Subsequently believing that he was being contacted by his Holy Guardian Angel, an entity known as Aiwass, whilst staying in Egypt in 1904, he received a text known as The Book of the Law from what he believed was a divine source, and around which he would come to develop his new religion of Thelema. He would go on to found his own occult society, the A∴A∴ and eventually rose to become a leader of Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), before founding a religious commune in Cefalu known as the Abbey of Thelema, which he led from 1920 through till 1923. After being evicted from Cefalu he returned to Britain, where he continued to promote Thelema until his death.
Crowley has remained an influential figure and is widely thought of as the most influential occultist of all time. In 2002, a BBC poll described him as being the seventy-third greatest Briton of all time. References to him can be found in the works of numerous writers, musicians and filmmakers, and he has also been cited as a key influence on many later esoteric groups and individuals, including Jimmy Page, Kenneth Grant, Jack Parsons, Gerald Gardner and, to some degree, Austin Osman Spare
Filmmaker Kenneth Anger, himself a devotee of Crowley, later uncovered and filmed some of its murals in his film Thelema Abbey (1955) now considered a lost film. Recently other murals were uncovered, and pictures of them were posted on the Internet. "Abbey of Thelema" remains a popular name for various magical societies, Witchcraft covens, and Satanist grottoes. It is also the name of a fan club for controversial rock star Marilyn Manson, who included the line "We're gonna ride to the Abbey of Thelema, to the Abbey of Thelema..." in his song "Misery Machine". Experimental musicians Coil, known to be fascinated by mysticism, went a step further in "The Sea Priestess" on Astral Disaster, whose lyrics are a bizarre interpretation of the murals in the Abbey.
The Abbey of Thelema
The name was borrowed from François Rabelais's satire Gargantua and Pantagruel, where an Abbey of Theleme is described as a sort of "anti-monastery" where the lives of the inhabitants were "spent not in laws, statutes, or rules, but according to their own free will and pleasure." This idealistic utopia was to be the model of Crowley's commune, while also being a type of magical school, giving it the designation "Collegium ad Spiritum Sanctum", A College towards the Holy Spirit.
The general programme was in line with the A∴A∴ course of training, and included daily adorations to the sun, a study of Crowley's writings, regular yogic and ritual practices (which were to be recorded), as well as general domestic labor.
The object was for students to devote themselves to the Great Work of discovering and manifesting their True Will.
Crowley had planned to transform the unimpressive small house into a international global center of magical devotion and perhaps to gain tuition fees paid by acolytes seeking training in the Magical Arts; these fees would further assist him in his efforts to promulgate Thelema and publish his presious manuscripts.
Two women, Hirsig and Shumway (her magical name was Sister Cypris after Aphrodite), were both carrying Crowley's un born children. Hirsig had a two-year old son named Hansi and Shumway had a three-year old boy named Howard; they were not Crowley's but he nicknamed them Dionysus and Hermes respectively. After Hirsig's Poupée died, Hirsig had a miscarriage but Shumway gave birth to a daughter (11/12/20), Astarte Lulu Panthea.
The Children of Aleister Crowley
1) Nuit Ma Ahathoor Hecate Sappho Jezebel Lilith (b. July 1904 - d. Spring 1906) — daughter of Rose Edith Crowley ("Ouarda").
2) Lola Zaza (b. 1906 - d. 1906)—daughter of Rose Edith Crowley ("Ouarda")
. 3) Anne Léa ("Poupée") (b. February 1920 - d. October 14, 1920) — daughter of Leah Hirsig. ("Alostrael").
4) Astarte Lulu Panthea (b. November 25th, 1922 - d. 2005 (year uncertain, but it was reported by Bill Heidrick from the O.T.O. ) — daughter of Ninette Shumway (aka Isabella Fraux). ("Cypris"). [Note: There are several disputed dates of her birth, but the correct one is found in Crowley's 1923 Diaries.]
5) Aleister Ataturk (b. 1938 - November 20, 2002) — son of Patricia "Deirdre" MacAlpine.
Astarte was raised in the USA from 1931 by Ninette's older sister Helene Fraux. Astarte has four children including jazz painist Eric Muhler. Hirsig suspected Shumway's Black Magic foul play and what Crowley found when reading Shumway's magical diary (everybody had to keep one while at the abbey for reasons explained in Liber E) appalled him. Shumway was banished from the abbey and the Beast lamented the death of his children. However, Shumway was soon back in the abbey again to take care of her offspring.
In 1923, a 23-year-old Oxford undergraduate by the name of Raoul Loveday (or Frederick Charles Loveday) died at the Abbey. His wife, Betty May, variously blamed the death on his participation in one of Crowley's rituals (allegedly incorporating the consumption of the blood of a sacrificed cat) or the more probable diagnosis of acute enteric fever contracted by drinking from a mountain spring. (Crowley had warned the couple against drinking the water, as reported in biographies by Lawrence Sutin, Richard Kaczynski and others.) When May returned to London, she gave an interview to a tabloid paper, The Sunday Express, which included her story in its ongoing attacks on Crowley. With these and similar rumors about activities at the Abbey in mind, Benito Mussolini's government demanded that Crowley leave the country in 1923.
After Crowley's departure, the Abbey of Thelema was eventually abandoned and local residents whitewashed over Crowley's murals.
The Poet by Aleister Crowley)
Bury me in an nameless grave!
I came from god the world to save.
I brought them wisdom from above: Worship, and Liberty, and Love. They slew me for I did disparage Therefore Religion, Law, and Marriage.
So be my grave without a name That earth may swallow up my shame!
Aleister Crowley had no formal public Burial. As far as informations states he was Cremated, and the possession or ocation of ashes is unknown. Though many rumors have persisted over the years that they have passed hands many times.
No one has actually published information or documentation on an actual paranormal investigation of Thelema Abbey. Though some recent fantastic tales of actual Séances being held there have surfaced over the years where actual contact with Raoul Loveday (or Frederick Charles Loveday) who died at the Abbey interacted with the participants.
A tumbledown building in the Italian countryside is to sell for €1.5 million (£1.2 million) because it once belonged to a British hedonist, writer and occultist who was dubbed "the wickedest man in the world".
The cottage, near the town of Cefalu in Sicily, contains explicit, erotic frescoes of men and women entwined together, painted by Cambridge-educated Crowley when he lived there in the early 1920s.
The frescoes, inspired by the work of Gauguin, also include naked devils, satyrs and serpents.
The estate agents that are selling the property, which has been abandoned for years and is overrun with bushes and long grass, have suggested that it should be turned into a museum devoted to Crowley's extraordinary life.
He called the house the Abbey of Thelema and turned it into a kind of commune, where daily life revolved around yoga, adoration of the Sun and the study of his own mystical philosophical writings.
Eventually his libertine tastes so offended Mussolini's fascists that they expelled him and his lovers from the country in April 1923.
Local people believe that the villa, which hosted orgies and experiments in free love that predated the hippy movement by decades, is cursed and refuse to go near it.
Crowley, who called himself The Great Beast, created a religious philosophy known as Thelema and is known for his mystical writings, including The Book of the Law, in which he set out the main tenets of Thelema.
